Mánadagin 29. desember 1941 lendi eitt flogfar í Vágum fyri fyrstu ferð nakrantíð. Hetta var eitt bretskt Catalina vatnflogfar, sum var á kanningarferð í Føroyum í sambandi við at bretar ætlaðu at byggja eina flogstøð í oyggjunum.
Flogfarið lendi á norðara enda á Vatninum, tætt við Vatnsoyrar. Leiðarin á kanningarferðini var Group Captain Leo Maxton. Uppgávan var at kanna, um lendast kundi á vatninum, eins og at gera kanningar á landi.
Áðrenn teir komu, høvdu teir gjørt avtalu við Dánjal Niclasen og Sørin Nielsen í Sørvági um at leggja eina fortøying út á Vatnið, so Catalina flogfarið kundi fortøjast, meðan farið var í land.
Eftir at leiðarin á kanningarferðini, Leo Maxton, hevði verið á landi í umleið ein tíma, róðu Dánjal Niclasen og Sørin Nielsen hann umborð aftur á flogfarið, sum síðani lætti aftur uttan trupulleikar.

The First Aircraft Ever to Land in Vágar – A British Catalina Flying Boat, 29 December 1941
On Monday, 29 December 1941, an aircraft landed in Vágar for the very first time in history. It was a Catalina flying boat on a reconnaissance mission to the Faroe Islands, connected with British plans to build an airfield in the islands.
The aircraft landed at the northern end of the Lake, close to Vatnsoyrar. The leader of the reconnaissance mission was Group Captain Leo Maxton. The task was to determine whether it was possible to land on the lake and to carry out surveys on land.
Before their arrival, arrangements had been made with Dánjal Niclasen and Sørin Nielsen from Sørvágur to place a mooring in the lake, so that the Catalina aircraft could be secured while the crew went ashore.
After the mission leader, Leo Maxton, had spent about an hour on land, Dánjal Niclasen and Sørin Nielsen rowed him back out to the aircraft, which then took off again without any difficulties.
During the flight, many aerial photographs were taken in Vágar, especially of the area around Sørvágur, where the airfield was planned to be built. Additional photographs were also taken elsewhere in the Faroe Islands to assess whether other locations might be suitable for an air base.
